πŸ” One Problem – Strategies for Publicizing Large Donations

Today we’re diving in headfirst into a question that was recently asked in ‘Your Thriving Nonprofit‘ Facebook group, one that got us thinking about etiquette when it comes to donors. The question was “If your smallish nonprofit (annual budget of $500k – $1MM) received an anonymous donation of $100,000 – would you publicize it? In hopes of reaching the donor to extend your thanks? Or not, thinking that it might discourage “typical” donors. Ya know, the ones that donate $50 or $100 or maybe $200?”

Our thoughts? Deciding whether to publicize a large anonymous donation is a strategic decision that depends on several factors, including your nonprofit’s culture, the preferences of your donor base, and your long-term fundraising strategy.

βœ…

Pros

  1. Encouraging Others: It can serve as a catalyst, encouraging other potential donors to contribute.
  2. Transparency: It demonstrates transparency in your operations and can increase credibility amongst supporters and the public.
  3. Recognition: Publicizing may reach the anonymous donor indirectly, allowing you to express gratitude publicly and possibly prompting them to come forward.

❌

Cons

  1. Donor Psychology: Some regular donors may feel their contributions are less significant in comparison and may be discouraged from giving.
  2. Setting Expectations: It might set high expectations for future donations, potentially affecting the regularity of smaller gifts.
  3. Privacy Concerns: The donor chose anonymity for a reason, and publicizing the donation could be against their wishes.
